9/12/2024 - CTFD was dispatched to the area of Cherokee Storage
in reference to a large amount of smoke coming from a field in in that area. Engine 51, Brush 53 and Squad 54 went en-route within two minutes of the initial dispatch. As units were responding, a large column of smoke was observed from the 380 overpass to 71. As Engine 51 arrived on scene, a large field fire, approximately 1 acre in size was observed, and was rapidly progressing towards a large dry cornfield to the West, and a large-wooded area to the North. Captain Spicer assumed Scene Command and requested an additional Tanker and Brush Truck from Station 60, and a Brush Truck from District 1.
Fire was brought under control in about 15 minutes and all other Mutual Aid Companies were disregarded. Tanker 60 was released after it was depleted of water. Crews remained on scene for approximately one hour to extinguish hot spots.
Brush 60 was released to return while all other District 5 Units remained on scene for cleanup. Crews waited approximately 20 minutes to ensure the fire would not rekindle. Units doused the area one more time and cleared the scene at approximately 1759 hours.
Thank you to Station 60 for Mutual Aid and quick response to the scene.
The cause of the fire is undetermined at this time.
